A Prayer

This piece was performed live in the IONA Youth Conference 2019, making a prayer for all the reasons why our people are feeling down.

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatu
Inshallah
Godwilling
I would love for this to be a calm message for you my brothers and sisters
Because recently there were many instances that made some of us become enraged
Some in pain
Some afraid
But I want to remind us
That all of us are okay
Because today Allah has granted us a way
To take a chance once again
Our breath right here
Our soul so clear
Our hearts beating loud in the rain
So we pray

Ya Allah guide us
Ya Allah protect us
Ya Allah save us
Too many times we turn away
Only calling out in our times of need
Ya Allah remind us
Of You
Don’t let us forget 
You
We love 
You
We know we have to return to You one day
Let us be ready
Let us be steadfast

Who knows when we’re going to get to meet You
And when our spirit gets sucked out of our corpse
And the horn is blown
We’ll wish for more time
Like an alarm that goes off
And we cry “please just gimme five more minutes”
But this time there’s no button that’ll grant us our wishes
No, this time, we have to answer for our ways
Our hours spent, our days
Are we ready to face our sins?

Please correct us
Please grant us your mercy
Protect us
Guide us
Save us
Ya Allah remind us
Of You
Don’t let us forget

The most gracious
Ya Rahim
The most merciful
Ya Ghafur
The all-forgiving
Ya Wadud
The loving, most kind
Ya muqallib al qaloob
Oh turner of hearts
Thabit qulubuna ala deenik
Keep our hearts firm on your deen

And let us be ready when you command them to stop
Innalillahi wa inailayhi rajioon
From Allah we have come and to Him we shall always return.
